a) “Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but as escape from emotion. It is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality.” Discuss Eliot’s impersonality theory in the light of this comment.
b) Comment on the views of T. S. Eliot on ‘tradition’ as expressed in his essay, Tradition and Individual Talent.
c) “The all important fact for the study of literature-or any other mode of communication-is that there are several kinds of meaning.” Comment on the kinds of meaning as enumerated in I. A. Richards’ Four Kinds of Meaning.

a) Present a brief note on primary and secondary imagination as discussed in Coleridge’s Biographia Literaria.
b) Comment briefly on I. A. Richards’ concept of ‘intention’.
c) Show your acquaintance with Coleridge as a critic.
d) Evaluate Matthew Arnold as a Victorian critic.
e) What, according to Arnold, are fallacious estimates of poet and poetry? Why does Arnold term them as fallacious?
f) “The poet’s mind is in fact a receptacle for seizing and storing up numberless feelings, phrases, images, which remain there until all the particles which can unite to form a new compound are present together.” (Tradition and Individual Talent) Explain.
g) Evaluate T. S. Eliot as a twentieth century literary critic.
