Plastic
Ban Flouted: Environmental Damage Soars
Guwahati, 13th December 2022:
Despite the state government's clear directive banning single-use plastic bags,
their usage remains rampant across major cities and towns, threatening our
environmental health. A recent survey by this correspondent reveals that the
ban is largely being ignored by small vendors and consumers alike due to weak
enforcement and lack of affordable alternatives.
The
indiscriminate use of plastic bags is causing severe ecological damage. Since
plastic is non-biodegradable, it chokes drainage systems, leading to waterlogging
during monsoons. Furthermore, when dumped, it contaminates soil and
groundwater. Animals often ingest discarded bags, which proves fatal for them.
The situation demands immediate and strict implementation of the ban, coupled
with public awareness campaigns promoting reusable options like cloth and jute
bags, before the damage becomes irreversible.
